Grove Goes Distance in 8-1 Win, The Kid Has a Blast in His Debut

We are simulating Red Sox History starting in 1939 using Out of the Park Baseball

April 18, 1939

The 1939 season is off to a poor start for the New York Yankees. The Yankees fell to the visiting Boston Red Sox, 8-1, at Yankee Stadium and are now 0-2 on the young season. Lefty Grove earned the coveted player the game award for Boston. Grove was effective against the Yankees, seldom allowing a hard-hit ball. The left-hander limited New York to just 1 run on 4 hits over 9 innings. "We've got a great group of guys," Grove said, "and we're having fun right now." Grove wasn't the only story though as top prospect Ted Williams made his debut. Williams would strike out his first time at the plate, single his second time up and then he hit a 440 foot blast to right center off of Red Ruffing for his first homer of his career.
