Extra-Inning Win by Dodgers over Giants

April 22, 1951

The Brooklyn Dodgers picked up a win on the road, knocking off the New York Giants, 3-2. Starting pitcher Carl Erskine was an essential part of his team's success. Ralph Branca got credit for the win, improving to 1-0. He allowed no runs on 2 hits in 2 innings. Brooklyn, now 4-1, is setting the league on fire so far. Brooklyn used the timely hitting of Gil Hodges to seize the win. The first baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the tenth inning to put the Dodgers on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer. "We were in it," said New York manager Leo Durocher. "We just didn't score enough runs."
