Robinson goes 4-for-4 as Dodgers Squeeze Past New York

April 21, 1951

The Brooklyn Dodgers downed the New York Giants, 8-7, at Polo Grounds . The Dodgers were led by Jackie Robinson, who captured player of the game honors. He was 4-4 with a home run, 3 singles, and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2. Brooklyn reliever Clem Labine picked up the win to move to 1-0. Larry Jansen suffered the loss. Ralph Branca earned his 2nd save in 2 tries. It could have been a different outcome for Brooklyn, had it not been for Gil Hodges, the two-time All-Star . Hodges contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning to put Brooklyn up, 6-5. "It was a solid team effort," said Hodges after the game. Brooklyn, now 3-1, is setting the league on fire so far.
