April 21, 1939: Athletics at Red Sox

This is a baseball simulation using Out of the Park Baseball

The Boston Red Sox got production from their entire lineup in an easy 13-1 win over the Philadelphia Athletics. Player of the game honors went to first baseman Jimmie Foxx. Foxx, who finished 4th in the AL in home runs with 36 in 1937, went 3 for 3 with a double, 2 singles, and 3 walks, while scoring 3 times.

The winning pitcher was Jim Bagby, who threw 123 pitches over 9 innings. The right-hander was charged with 1 run on 8 hits. The loss drops Philadelphia to 0-2.

With two out in the bottom of the second, Doc Cramer stroked a go-ahead 2-run single. It was his 3rd hit of the season and put Boston in front, 2-0. "We took advantage of our opportunities," Cramer told the Boston Citizen. "It's as simple as that."

Game Notes

This was the first game ever for Ted Williams at Fenway Park and he homered in his second at bat. It would be his only hit of the game. In actual history the Red Sox would also win this pretty easily. Ted Williams would go just 1-5 in that game with a single.

Here is the actual boxscore from that game.

The Red Sox are now 1-1 which was their exact record at this point in the actual 1939 season. They play the Athletics again tomorrow. Woody Rich will start on the mound for the Red Sox and the Athletics will send Buck Ross to the mound
