1948 Red Sox Season Replay: Rizzuto Helps Yankees Scoot Past Red Sox

This is a 1948 Boston Red Sox Season Replay using the baseball simulation engine of Out of the Park Baseball

May 2, 1948

The Boston Red Sox got a superb performance from pitcher Mel Parnell, but the New York Yankees still won the game, 3-2. Parnell threw 8 innings of 5-hit ball. New York is off to a hot start at 8-4.

Phil Rizzuto's hit in the top of the ninth was a game-changer. With two out, he rapped a fastball from Earl Johnson for a run-scoring single. It put New York in front, 3-2.

"I was a little disappointed," said Boston manager Joe McCarthy. "We could've and should've scored more runs."

The Red Sox fall to 7-6 and are now two games back of the Detroit Tigers. The Red Sox will have tomorrow off before those first place Tigers come into Fenway for a three game series. Jack Kramer will start the first game of that series for the Red Sox. Kramer is 2-1 with a 2.16 ERA. The Tigers will counter with Dizzy Trout who is 2-0 with a 3.60 ERA

The Cardinals remain in first place in the NL with a half game lead on the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Braves.
