Red Sox By The Numbers: Beware of Edwin

The Red Sox open the season in Seattle with Chris Sale getting the start against the Mariners Marco Gonzales and as expected the Sox are pretty big favorites tonight. They will be favorites almost all the time when Sale is on the hill.

The odds have the Sox as -188 favorites on the moneyline are just -110 when giving the Mariner 1.5 runs on the runline. The over/under for runs scored tonight is 7 Chris Sale has dominated the current Mariners roster with the exception of Edwin Encarnacion. In 23 plate appearances against Sale, Encarnacion has slugged .316/.453/.632 for an OPS of 1.066 with 2 homers and 4 runs batted in. The rest of the Mariners rosters has just 7 hits in 69 plate appearances with 0 homers, 0 runs batted in and they have struck out 29 times.

There is very little history when it comes to Marco Gonzales and the current Red Sox roster. Only 23 plate appearances total and nobody on the Red Sox roster has more than 3 plate appearances against him. Mitch Moreland has a homer in the 3 plate appearances and Jackie Bradley Jr. is 2-2 with 2 singles.

We will never advise you to bet against the Red Sox. We will only advise you when to bet on the Red Sox and when to stay away. This is one those games we think you should stay away from when it comes to betting.

Today will be the ninth time the Red Sox have opened the season as the defending World Champions. They are 4-4 on Opening Day as the defending champs. Here is a list of their Opening Day results as the champs:

1904: Lost on the road to the Yankees 8-2

1913: Lost at home to the Athletics 10-9

1916: Won at home against the Athletics 2-1

1917: Won on the road against the Yankees 10-3

1919: Won on the road against the Yankees 10-0

2005: Lost on the road to the Yankees 9-2

2008: Won against the Athletics in Japan 6-5 in 10 innings

2014: Lost on the road against the Orioles 2-1

On this date in 1907 Popular outfielder Chick Stahl, who replaced Jimmy Collins as manager of the Boston Americans at the end of last season, commits suicide while travelling with the team in West Baden Springs, Indiana. After breakfast he returns to his room and drinks four ounces of carbolic acid. He leaves a note: "Boys, I just couldn't help it. It drove me to it." Cy Young reluctantly agrees to start the season as Boston's manager, but there will be three others during the year. We went into more detail about this bizarre story here

Best Bets

The Mets are 37-12 on Opening Day since 1969. That is just mind boggling. They play Washington today with the best pitching matchup of the day as Jacob deGrom takes on Max Scherzer. deGrom owns this Nationals roster, The current Nationals roster has had 217 plate appearances against deGrom and have combined slash line of .157/.194/.235

Scherzer has been awful against the current Mets roster but not as dominant as deGrom has been against the Nats roster. Michael Conforto of the Mets also seems to love facing Max. Conforto has faced him 26 times and has gone deep 4 times. Take the Mets on the moneyline at +113

Bryce Harper makes his debut for the Phillies today and he has to be excited that he gets to face Julio Teheran. Harper has owned Julio over their careers. They have faced each other 52 times and Harper has gone deep 8 times with 19 runs batted in. He has .450 average against Teheran and slugging 1.125. It could be a great day for Bryce in Philly. Take the Phillies -1.5 on the runline at +120
