Goodman Goes 3-4, Red Sox Move to 2-1

This is a 1948 Boston Red Sox Season Replay using the baseball simulation engine of Out of the Park Baseball

Wednesday April 21, 1948

Billy Goodman helped his team muscle past the Philadelphia Athletics, 8-3. In the game, the Boston first baseman went 3-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. At 2-1, the Red Sox have played well so far.

Bobby Doerr, who is a six-time All-Star, aided the Boston cause with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the first. For the game, the second baseman was 3-4 with 3 singles, while adding 2 RBI. Goodman told a Boston Daily News reporter that he was "satisfied" with the win.

The Red Sox are 2-1 and trail the Yankees by one game for first place in the AL. The Red Sox will have tomorrow off before traveling to New York to take on the Yankees in a three game series. Ellis Kinder will make his first start for the Red Sox on Friday in Yankee Stadium.

Around the Majors

It doesn't happen very often, but it did for Mickey Vernon today -- a 5-hit day. He went on a rampage and sparkled on the diamond at Griffith Stadium, but the performance lost a little luster when the Senators were downed 14-8 by the New York Yankees. After his glittering performance, the Washington first baseman told the press that he "just tried to get myself in a good count and have a good at-bat." His batting theory paid dividends today as he slammed 5 hits in 6 tries and put his name in the record book.

"I just wish we had added a win in the record book today, too," Vernon said. Mickey Vernon singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, struck out in the 5th, hit a two-run double in the 6th, singled in the 8th and singled in the 9th
