The Day Chip Caray Wanted to Become a Baseball Broadcaster

If you don't listen to the Baseball Tonight Podcast with Buster Olney, what is wrong with you? It's the best podcast out there in my opinion and Tuesday's episode was another classic example as to why it is so good.

Buster had Braves' announcer Chip Caray on and it was fantastic. It was the first time I have ever heard Chip talk about his career and his legendary father and grandfather. I learned things I didn't know and that is always good. I won't give away the whole interview but one part really fascinated me in part because I love looking up old boxscores.

Chip said he remembers Bob Watson hitting a pinch hit walk off homer off of Steve Howe of the Dodgers. On the way home in the car with his Dad, the radio replayed the homer and his Dad's classic call of the homer. Chip was hooked and turned to his Dad and told him he wanted in on the family business.

I urge you to listen to the complete interview here. It is really good.

As for the actual game, it was August 13, 1983. The win would give the Braves a 71-46 record in front of a crowd of over 48,000 fans in Fulton County Stadium.
