A Great Night for Bay and Youkilis

Jason Bay will forever be known in Boston as the guy who replaced Manny Ramirez. He did have some great moments though in his short stay in Boston.

One of those moments came nine years ago tonight as he hit a two out, two run, game tying homer off Mariano Rivera and the Yankees.

Kevin Youkilis would end in the 11th inning with a walk off homer off of Damaso Marte

Here is the complete boxscore  with the videos of both homeruns below

Ted Williams Homers for the First Time

79 years ago today in front of 12,000 fans at Fenway Park, Ted Williams hit the first home run of his major league career. It would come in the fourth game of the season for the Red Sox and it would come off of Bud Thomas of the Philadelphia Athletics.

Teddy would get the start in right field that day, as he would throughout most of his rookie season in 1939, he would go 4-5 for the game with three runs batted in. Thomas would record just two outs while giving up four earned runs. Amazingly, the Red Sox would still manage to lose this game 12-8 and fall to 2-2 on the season.

Williams would hit 520 more homers but just one more off of Thomas. Williams would come to the plate 11 times in his career against Thomas and manage just two hits and a walk. Both hits were homers.

Ted Williams would face Bob Feller more than any other pitcher in his career, 178 plate appearances. Williams would hit 10 homers off of Feller, the most he hit off of any other pitcher. Williams finished his career with a .357 average against "Rapid Robert". Feller would often say that trying to throw a fastball by Williams was like trying to get a ray of sun light by a rooster.

Jack Harshman might not be a household name but he gave Williams the most trouble in his career, Williams would come to the plate 35 times against Harshman hitting just .156 with 0 homeruns and 7 strikeouts.

Are the Braves the Best Team in Baseball?

Yes, I know it is very early in the season but it is still very interesting to look at what has taken place so far in the 2018 baseball season.

The number I am looking right now is the Simple Rating System (SRS) for each team. The Simple Rating System takes into account run differential and strength of schedule. The average SRS number is 0.

So far it is the Braves leading the way with an impressive 3.2 SRS. The other thing you will notice is how the National League dominates the Top 5.

I don't think the Braves have the pitching to truly be the best team in baseball when the season ends. However, the NL East isn't as good as most people think and I believe the Braves have enough talent to be celebrating an NL East title in late September.

1. Braves3.2
2. Diamondbacks2.4
3. Red Sox2.3
4. Phillies2.2
5. Mets2
Next we look at the five worst teams and you will notice they all come from the American League with the White Sox leading the way for worst team so far in the major leagues.

26. Rangers-1.7
27. Tigers-2
28. Orioles-2.4
29. Royals-3.6
30. White Sox-4
