1988 Red Sox Replay Season: Red Sox Stun Tigers, 3-2

Game 3 of 162

Ellis Burks has a huge day as he homers twice including a walk off homer as the Sox start the season 3-0. The biggest surprise is how well Jeff Sellers pitched.

The Red Sox are in first place in the AL East but the interesting past is that the Orioles are at 2-1. If you remember, 1988 was the season in which the Orioles got off to that horrible start where they lost their first 21 games. They would go just 1-22 in April and finish the year at 54-107. So far they are bucking that trend and are 2-1 and sit a game behind the division leading Red Sox.

Here is the game story and the box score:

The Boston Red Sox topped the Detroit Tigers, 3-2, with center fielder Ellis Burks playing a big role. Burks went 3 for 4 with 2 home runs, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 2 for the Red Sox in the win. Boston, now 3-0, has gotten their season off to a good start.

Burks had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the ninth. On a 0-1 fastball from Frank Tanana, he banged a solo home run to left-center, giving the Red Sox a 3-2 lead. It was the 3rd home run of the year for Burks.

"Nice to put this one in the win column," said Burks.
