Boston got a terrific performance from pitcher Lefty Grove, but it wasn't enough to beat the Philadelphia Athletics. Philadelphia won the contest, 6-5. Grove was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 8 innings of 7-hit ball.
The Red Sox drop to 6-7 and continue their inconsistent start to the 1939 season. The Athletics got a big at-bat from shortstop Skeeter Newsome. For the game, Newsome went 1 for 1. In the bottom of the tenth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 3rd hit of the season gave Philadelphia a 6-5 lead.
"Honestly, I'm not frustrated," said Boston manager Joe Cronin. "The effort was great."
