The two day torture of no baseball ends tonight with a full slate of baseball games. The world is right again. It's not perfect though. Jordan Montgomery of my beloved Gamecocks takes the ball for the Yankees to face off against my beloved Red Sox and of course Jackie Bradley.
It will be Montgomery's first start against the Red Sox and the first time he will face former college teammate, JBJ, in the majors.
The Red Sox drafted JBJ in the 2011 draft. However, the Yankees have been drafting Gamecocks on a regular basis. Jordan Montgomery was drafted by the Yankees in 2014, Nick Ebert and Deangelo Mack were drafted by the Yankees in 2009, Taylor Widener and Dom Thompson-Williams in 2016 and of course Clarke Schmidt just this year.
Then there is Tyler Webb who was drafted by the Yankees in 2013 and was just traded by the Yankees to the Brewers for minor league first baseman Garrett Cooper.
This trade makes sense for the Yankees. Their first base issues are about as bad as the Red Sox third base issues. I was surprised the Yankees did not go after former Gamecock, Christian Walker.
Walker is stuck in Triple A in the Diamondbacks organization, blocked by a guy named Paul Goldschmidt. Walker has earned a trip to the majors as he is destroying the Pacific Coast League. Walker even earned a start in the PCL All Star Game this week.
Walker is hitting .303 with 22 homeruns and 88 runs batted in over in the PCL. There are many MLB teams he can help right now, the Yankees being one of them. Maybe the Diamondbacks asked for too much in return from the Yankees. Regardless, it has to be frustrating for Walker. Maybe the Red Sox can swing a deal for him in the offseason if they decide not to re-sign Mitch Moreland.
