Tonight could be the night that 2,000 lucky Clemson fans get to enjoy one of the most historic nights in Clemson basketball history. The Tigers will be going after yet another NIT victory. I think we all remember the last time Clemson hosted an NIT game....It was epic
To celebrate Clemson basketball in all its glory here is a satirical piece I wrote in November of 2015 after their double overtime win against basketball power Lenoir-Rhyne. If you are a tater and don't know what the word satirical means, let a neighbor or google help you
Clemson Shocks Lenoir-Rhyne in Double Overtime
November 8, 2015
The football team may be getting most of the press but the basketball team did their part to thrust themselves into the national spotlight with a shocking come from behind win over Lenoir-Rhyne in double overtime. It may have just been an exhibition but Coach Brownell feels it was as big of a game as his team will play all season.
"This was huge. I told our guys before the game that nobody thinks we can play with this team. We came out with a chip on our shoulder and fought through adversity and got it done" said Brownell.
The adversity came with just under six minutes left in the game when Clemson found themselves down by 12 points.
That is when Donte Grantham took over. "I felt the ghosts of all the great Clemson basketball teams from the past just enter my soul man. I couldn't let those ghosts down" said Grantham who scored 27 points.
The Lenoir-Rhyne Bears appeared to be shell shocked. "I have to give them credit, they played hard but this is a game we needed to win. I was worried we would be complacent and take them lightly and I think we did" said Bears Head Coach Ryan Odom
"Listen, if we play them 10 times they probably beat us 9 of those times, but not tonight. Tonight was our night" said a joyous Brad Brownell
What does this mean for the rest of the Clemson basketball season? It could mean a lot according to Brownell
"I know it is just an exhibition and doesn't technically go on our resume but I guarantee you when that committee meets in March to figure out who is going dancing, tonight's win is going to be front and center on their minds. They may not be able to admit that but it will be there" added Brownell
All 312 screaming fans that were in attendance will remember this night for years to come. It is already being dubbed "The Miracle at the Wellness Arena" making many fans hearken back to the win over Belmont in the NIT a couple seasons ago
"That Belmont win still makes me smile. One of the biggest wins in program history but that Belmont team was far less talented than this Bear team we faced tonight. There are at least 4 NBA guys on this Bears roster. I am talking big time NBA guys. I mean they watch the preseason games, the pregame shows and even listen to podcasts about the NBA. I think Belmont had maybe one NBA guy and he basically didn't start watching the league until Christmas Day each year, no comparison" said the legendary Clemson coach Brad Brownell
