Twenty years ago we slapped Kentucky around at home with Dick Vitale in the building. As the game ended Dick Vitale warned the Gamecocks of their demise in the rematch game in Lexington on Senior Day.
Senior Day in Lexington was for the SEC regular season title. I was nervous and so was my roommate. Five minutes into the game I sat back in my chair. This incredible feeling came over me. We were the better team. They weren't going to beat us. I told my roommate, we were just better.
A 15-1 record in the SEC led to a #2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. We were finally going to find out what it felt like to make a run in March Madness. It didn't happen. It didn't happen the next year either as a #3 seed. The lawn furniture on our college apartment porch would pay the price. We missed our chance. Would it ever come again?
In 2017 Gamecock fans would grow frustrated wondering how good we could be if Duane Notice and Chris Silva played well in the same game. Sunday night in Greenville we found out and so did Duke. Notice would go 6-8 from the field and 2-4 from the three point line for 17 points. Silva would go 6-12 from the floor for 17 points and pull down 10 rebounds. That combination along with the play of Sindarius Thornwell has the Gamecocks making a run in March Madness 20 years later. We finally found out what it feels like. Can it last for four more games? We will find out.
